Best Places to See Tulip Fields in The Netherlands

Spring Into the Season

Spring is upon us, and what better way to enjoy the season than by admiring some beautiful flowers! The Netherlands is famous for its stunning flat landscape, sprinkled with windmills and filled with gorgeous tulip fields. You may know The Netherlands as Holland, but actually the country has 12 different regions. The two regions, Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland, make up the area of Holland. A huge reason for tourism in The Netherlands is the tulips fields, which bloom from late March to early May. The best time to see the tulip fields in the Netherlands is mid to late April. Here are a few of the best places to see the iconic tulip fields in The Netherlands.

Best Places to See Tulip Fields in The Netherlands

Keukenhof

Opened in 1950, Keukenhof is the biggest flower park in the world, with more than 7 million flower bulbs planted each year. It’s only open from mid-March to mid-May when the tulips are in bloom, but multiple other flowers can also be seen during this time, such as hyacinths, orchids, roses, lilies, daffodils, and more. Each year, the park has a different theme for its floral exhibits, with “A World of Colours” being the theme for 2021. A popular way to explore the tulip fields is on a bike, which you can rent at Keukenhof or bring your own.

Known as the flower bulb region, Bollenstreek is between Amsterdam and The Hague. The most important time in Bollenstreek is Corsoweek, or parade week. This is when volunteers prepare for the annual flower parade that’s towards the end of April. The parade begins on a Saturday morning in Noordwijk and ends Saturday evening in Haarlem, following a 26-mile route, and the floats are left up for display on Sunday. You can even purchase a ticket to watch the parade floats being made. One of the best and most popular spots to watch the flower parade is on Keukenhof Boulevard in Lisse, which is near Keukenhof flower park. In 2021, the parade was scheduled for April 17 but has been cancelled due to COVID-19, and in 2022, it’s scheduled for April 23.

Home to the world’s biggest single flower bulb field, Kop van Noord-Holland is a rural region of Holland, with windmills, tulip fields, and views of the coast and dunes. There are plenty of hiking and biking routes surrounding the tulip fields so you can get the best view. If you don’t want to deal with other tourists, this area is a great alternative to the more popular Keukenhof flower park.

De Tulperij

About 5 kilometers from Keukenhof flower park, you’ll find a tulip farm called De Tulperij. It’s currently owned and operated by husband and wife, Daan and Anja Jansze. They offer tours (in Dutch, English, or German) of the tulip fields, where Daan explains the growing and blooming process. You’ll also have time for plenty of photos and be able to see their greenhouse, where they have fresh Dutch waffles and baked apple pies. They also have potted tulips and daffodils, dahlia tubers, and souvenirs for sale.
